For more than two decades, Richardo Erskine has devoted himself to studying plants, herbs, traditional Jamaican botanical knowledge and natural formulations.
His journey began long before More Life Products Ltd. was formally established in 2016. According to the company’s history, Erskine began by developing affordable herbal and spice-based preparations for people in his community. He later pursued formal study in ethnomedicine, completing his certification with great merit in 2015.
Today, his work brings together traditional botanical knowledge, years of practical experience and product formulation. More Life Products has expanded from individualized preparations into essential oils, CBD and CBN oils, teas, liquid preparations, body and personal-care products, foods, beverages and nutraceutical concepts.
We spoke with Richardo about the journey behind More Life Products and his vision for bringing Jamaica’s botanical heritage to a wider audience.
Q: Richardo, where did this journey begin?
Richardo Erskine:
It really started with the plants.
Long before More Life Products became a registered business, I was studying what grows around us and learning about the traditional ways plants and herbs have been used.
Jamaica has tremendous botanical knowledge. A lot of it has been passed from one generation to another, but I wanted to go deeper. I wanted to understand not only what people were using, but the formulations, preparation and science behind it.
I have now been studying medicine and plant-based approaches for more than 20 years. In 2015, I completed my ethnomedicine certification with great merit, and in 2016 More Life Products was officially established.
That was when years of study began developing into something much bigger.
Q: What does ethnomedicine mean to you?
Richardo Erskine:
To me, ethnomedicine is about understanding the relationship between people, culture, plants and traditional approaches to health.
Jamaica has an incredible heritage in this area.
My work has included essential oils, teas, CBD oil, CBN oil, liquid preparations, individualized botanical formulations, therapy, energy work and other natural-wellness approaches.
Over the years, I have worked with more than 800 individuals, and every person has taught me something about the importance of listening, observing and continuing to learn.
Q: More Life Products has grown beyond individualized remedies. Was that always the plan?
Richardo Erskine:
The vision grew over time.
You may begin with one plant, one preparation or one person you’re trying to help. Eventually you start asking, How can we take this knowledge and create products that more people can actually use in everyday life?
That became an important part of More Life Products.
We began developing products that could combine Jamaica’s botanical traditions with modern formulation and commercial production.
Our philosophy is simple: bring more life to everyday products.
Q: What types of products are you creating today?
Richardo Erskine:
We work across several areas.
There are essential oils, CBD oil, CBN oil, teas, liquid preparations, body-care products, mouth and eye-care products, and individualized formulations.
Then we have another side of the company that I find particularly exciting—functional foods and beverages.
I don’t believe natural wellness has to exist only in a medicine bottle.
Food is something people interact with every day. That gives us an opportunity to think differently about what a food product can be.
Q: Is that thinking what led to the Sweet & Spicy ALL PURPOSE SAUCE?
Richardo Erskine:
Absolutely.
The sauce grew from experimentation with flavor and natural ingredients.
What eventually emerged was our Sweet & Spicy ALL PURPOSE SAUCE—a product we developed as both a flavorful Jamaican food product and part of our broader nutraceutical vision.
We describe it as the first Sweet & Spicy ALL PURPOSE SAUCE developed in Jamaica within our company’s product concept.
The idea is simple: people shouldn’t have to choose between something enjoyable and our philosophy of creating products inspired by nature.
It works with seafood, vegetarian dishes, meats, jerk, barbecue, stews and many other foods.
Q: And now you’ve developed MoreLife Roots?
Richardo Erskine:
Yes. MoreLife Roots represents another chapter for us.
Roots beverages have a long cultural history in Jamaica. We wanted to approach that heritage through the More Life philosophy—respecting the tradition while developing a product suitable for today’s consumer.
It also shows where I believe More Life Products is heading.
We’re not abandoning traditional knowledge as we grow. We’re finding new ways to carry that knowledge forward.
Q: Your family is also an important part of the business.
Richardo Erskine:
Very much so.
My wife and I work together in the business, and we have a son. Building More Life Products is therefore more than entrepreneurship for us—it is something we’re building as a family.
We each bring different strengths.
My work is heavily focused on plants, formulations, ethnomedicine and product development, while my wife works alongside me in building, promoting and presenting the company and its products to the world.
Our son also gives what we’re doing another meaning.
When you’re building something that may eventually become part of your child’s future, you start thinking in generations rather than just in years.
Q: Education seems to be becoming another part of your work.
Richardo Erskine:
Yes. Creating products is only part of the mission.
People also need opportunities to learn.
That’s one reason I enjoy discussing ethnomedicine, natural remedies, essential oils, nutraceuticals and healthy living publicly.
I’m featured on FIT FM 96.7 in Trelawny, Jamaica, every other Wednesday, where we can have conversations about these subjects and introduce listeners to different aspects of natural wellness.
Radio allows this knowledge to reach people who may never walk through our door.
Q: After more than 20 years of studying this field, what keeps you interested?
Richardo Erskine:
There is always something else to learn.
Plants are incredibly complex. Traditional knowledge is complex. Human beings are complex.
I don’t think you ever reach a point where you can say you know everything.
That’s why I continue studying, experimenting and developing.
The more you learn about nature, the more you realize how much remains to be understood.
Q: What do you ultimately want More Life Products to become?
Richardo Erskine:
I want people outside Jamaica to recognize the value of what Jamaica has.
We have plants. We have knowledge. We have agriculture. We have traditions that have survived for generations. And we have the creativity to turn those resources into modern products.
The goal is to develop premium Jamaican nutraceutical, food, botanical and wellness products that can reach consumers well beyond our shores.
But as we grow, I want us to remember where everything started.
With the plants.
With the people.
And with the belief that nature still has much to teach us.
More Life. More Power.
From individualized botanical preparations to essential oils, CBD and CBN oils, the Sweet & Spicy ALL PURPOSE SAUCE, and now MoreLife Roots, Richardo Erskine’s story reflects the larger vision behind More Life Products:
Taking knowledge rooted in Jamaica and developing it for a new generation.
Creating Better Life Experiences Through Nature Since 2016.
