For generations, Jamaica’s rich landscape has provided more than food and beauty. Across communities, knowledge of local plants has been passed from one generation to another, with herbs prepared as teas, tonics and other traditional remedies. At More Life Products Ltd., we believe this botanical heritage deserves to be remembered, respected and explored alongside modern scientific research.

Five Plants from Jamaica’s Herbal Tradition

Vervain (Verbena officinalis) has a long history of traditional herbal use. It has been used in preparations associated with relaxation, digestion and general wellness. Research has also investigated Verbena officinalis for antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity. These findings are areas of scientific study and should not be interpreted as proof that the plant treats or cures disease.

Donkey Weed (Stylosanthes hamata) is a hardy tropical plant known in Caribbean folk traditions. Traditional uses have included preparations for general discomfort, inflammation and wellness. Its phytochemistry and potential biological activities are areas where further scientific research is valuable.

Yellow Dock (Rumex crispus) has traditionally been used as a root preparation, particularly in herbal practices associated with digestion and cleansing. Research into Rumex species has identified various plant compounds with potential biological activity, but traditional claims such as “detoxifying the blood” should not be treated as established medical effects.

Medina (Alysicarpus vaginalis) has a place in Jamaican folk-herbal traditions, including preparations associated with digestion, vitality and reproductive wellness. These traditional uses form part of Jamaica’s ethnobotanical knowledge, although they should be distinguished from clinically demonstrated medical benefits.

Ram Goat Dash Along (Turnera ulmifolia) is another plant associated with Jamaican and Caribbean herbal traditions. It has been traditionally connected with vitality and reproductive wellness, while researchers have studied Turnera species for several potential biological properties.

Tradition Meets Science

Traditional knowledge can provide important clues about how communities have interacted with plants over centuries. Modern research gives us another tool: the ability to investigate plant chemistry, biological mechanisms, safety, dosage and potential therapeutic applications under controlled conditions.

The two should not be confused. A plant's long history of traditional use does not automatically establish that it can prevent, treat or cure a medical condition. Likewise, promising laboratory findings do not necessarily mean that the same effect will occur in people.

That distinction is especially important when herbal products are consumed internally. Natural substances can still cause adverse effects, interact with medications, or be unsuitable during pregnancy or for people with particular medical conditions.

Preserving Jamaica’s Botanical Knowledge

Jamaica’s herbal traditions are part of a broader cultural inheritance connecting agriculture, family knowledge, community practices and the island’s extraordinary biodiversity. Documenting that knowledge responsibly can help preserve it while encouraging careful scientific investigation of the plants themselves.

At More Life Products Ltd., our vision is rooted in that relationship between nature, heritage and the future.

Nature inspires. Tradition guides. Wellness empowers.

Rooted in Tradition. Growing for Tomorrow.
